It's that time of the year again. A time when it's cool to scare people, more horror movies hit the big and small screens and children from foreign lands (Westmoorings) dress up like ghost 'n goblins (see what I did there) to get snacks and candy. I thought it would be fun to list some of the top games that affected me... in a frightening way of course. Some of these are not horror games but they had horror elements in them that made me quite uncomfortable while playing them. I dear you to play each clip below and not clinch your butt once.
5. Maniac Mansion
Where is the run button?
According to my mother this game gave me nightmares and she could never understood why I used to play it as a kid. Maybe it was because I sucked at playing it so bad that it felt like a slasher movie where all the teenagers eventually die in the end. But that wasn't the scariest part. The track that played when you got caught freaked me OUT! Listen to it:
4. F.E.A.R
Why do it have to be a child
I thought... this game can't be that scary because you have a gun. HA! I never uttered that again after playing this game. There are moments of action and horror in this first person shooter that worked with the story they were telling. Adding to the this, it had a creepy little girl that followed you playing tricks with the protagonist's mind. I don't think I ever finished this game.
3. Resident Evil 4
That little gun isn't going to help you
Resident Evil have a long history of scaring the sh*t outta people. Heck they made a crapping movie out of it. With that being said, I was naive when I played this as it was my first RE experience. At certain intervals I asked myself why am I doing this but it's fun being a scared (me) secret service agent trying to rescue the president's daughter while being hunted by infected villagers, animals, and science experiments. This is the only game on this list that made my top games list because of the many great boss battles and intense action gameplay.
2. Dead Space 2
Shoot the limbs
Oh Dead Space... How I hate you. I thought you'd be fun like Resident Evil 4 but that quickly went away within the first few minutes of the game. Jump scares, jump scares and guess what more jump scares. The sound design of this title is first class because the sounds of the creatures alone made me stop and look around. The only thing that motivated me to finish this game was the trophies (love me some trophies). Otherwise, there is no way in hell I would have completed it.
1. Slender Man: The Arrival
Don't turn around
Saying his name still gives me the creeps. I never thought a game could make me paranoid until this game showed its ugly face (or no face). It's simple, stay away from the devilishly tall guy in the woods that wants to kill you with no weapons, just a camcorder. If that wasn't frightening enough he's super fast and in later levels he gets help fromhis past victims. This game is the reason why I stay away from recent horror games like Outlast, Five Nights at Freddy's and Allison Road. If a game can do that then you know they're doing something right.
Honorable Mentions
Brave Fencer Musashi, Demon Souls, Maximum Carnage, Last of Us and Batman: Arkham Asylum
What do you guys think? Do you agree with my list? Please leave your thoughts below and list some games that terrified you. It doesn't have to be a horror game.
