Video game movies are notorious for being terrible. I sat through some of these movies but there are a few of them that aren't video game movies that are actually good. These movies are not adaptions of popular video games but felt like it was ripped right out of one. Some of the video game inspiration in this list are more glaring then others so without further ado let's get started.
5: TRON
Were you ever stuck in a virtual world? Well this happen to the protagonist Flynn in this movie when he was trying to hack into one of his employee's computer. This science fiction action-adventure took place mostly in a virtual world where Flynn had to play games that represented old school arcade games to survive. The movie borrowed from video games of its time and the protagonist was a video game programmer. Though the movie has pacing problems I still enjoy it.
4: The Raid: Redemption
This Indonesian action movie follows a police Lieutenant that organizes the invasion of an apartment building that is the safe house of the powerful and cruel drug lord. Many film critics echoed the fact that the movie is an action game where each floor of the building represented another level of a game. His fights also gets tougher as he progresses through the building. If you like action movies this is a must watch.
3: Inception
This science fiction thriller directed by Christopher Nolan who is famous for his complex plots in movies in movies such as The Prestige and Interstellar made this gem. It felt like a video game because of the (again) levels that was created to steal information from someones mind but there was one level in particular that was ripped right out of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It felt like I was watching the game with Leonardo DiCaprio leading his team of soldiers. The only thing that was missing was an air strike. Suffice it to say, I loved this movie (watch it many times when it came out on DVD).
2: Wreck-it Ralph
This movie follows an arcade character called Ralph that's tired of being the antagonist of a game called Fix-it Felix Jr. After decades of losing to Felix he leaves his game and goes on a journey to become a hero and get a medal (or save a princess). Disney did good. I never though a movie like this would be made, let alone make over $500 million USD in the box office. The movie had a good plot, tons of video game references and lovable characters. If you a gamer, you cannot watch this movie without a huge grin on your face.
1: Scott Pilgrim VS. the World
The pinnacle of video game inspired movies in my opinion. I was so intrigue by this movie when I saw the trailer that I bought the comics it was based on. The comics was good but the movie... NAILED IT! Directed by Edgar Wright one of my all time favourite directors that did movies like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz crushed this adaptation. CRUSHED IT! The video game references was never ending and the plot has the protagonist fighting his new girlfriend's evil ex-boyfriends (and one girl). It was casted perfectly (I'm looking at you Max Payne) and the soundtrack created by Beck was excellent. Gamers that never heard of Scott Pilgrim should do themselves a favour and watch this movie. You wouldn't be disappointed.
Do you agree with my list? Is there any other video game inspired movie that you think I omitted from this list? Please leave your comments below and share this post with your friends.

ReplyDeleteI agree with all of your choices except the Inception one. maybe it's because I've never completed Modern Warfare's campaign. I do however, agree with your choices for the others, especially Scott Pilgrim VS. the World.
ReplyDeleteInception had a lot of things going for it. The modern warfare element just added to it greatness.
