PlayStation VR Impressions

Playstation VR

Originally named "Project Morpheus" the PlayStation VR is Sony's first dive into virtual reality (VR) technology. I finally got my hands on one recently and it was a magical experience. Full disclosure, I've never experienced VR before with any of the other VR headsets (HTC Vive, Oculus Rift) because of the price tag and the ridiculous PC you'll need to run it.

Headset, VR
Slick looking headset
The PlayStation VR is cheaper than all the other headsets on the market right now and for it's price it looks like Sony didn't cut any corners while making the device. It slips over your head pretty easily with soft padding around the ring of the headset for comfort and knobs to adjust the tightness and screen. However, setting this up requires a little patience because of all the cables you have to connect to multiple devices.

Oh the humanity!
GAMES! I was able to tried several games with the demo disc that comes with it (after my brother was finished playing of course). The first game I played was Wayward Sky. It's a puzzle game where players guide the story’s main protagonist indirectly. Impressed I was (Yoda Voice). It's not a first person game but I felt like I was a director of a play and had complete control. The second game I played was London Heist from PlayStation VR Worlds (an FPS finally). Again, I was impressed. The game ran smoothly and I was able to shoot and seamlessly reload my weapon by mimicking the action. Below is a short video of my brother playing the kitchen demo (Resident Evil 7).

I was pleasantly surprised overall with PlayStation VR. I didn't know what to expect at first but the more I played with it, the better it felt. The amount of cables you have to connect can be a hassle but it's a quality VR headset and a must buy for hardcore gamers like myself. One day I'll try the other VR headsets so that I can judge Sony's own better but for now I can't wait for what VR entails for the future of video games.

PlayStation VR was released October 13, 2016 for $400 USD and it works with the PlayStation 4 using a PS4 controller or two PlayStation Move controllers (according to the game).

What do you guys think, is virtual reality the future of games or a small splash in a blue ocean? Please leave a comment below and share on social media.

  3. OMG I tried the version at the Samsung store and it was amazing. I was shooting Zombies and it was so much fun. Unfortunately, my samsung isn't working with it and I couldn't afford to buy one but I'm looking out for Black Friday sale or even Boxing Day sale to see if I get it on a deal. Wish I could have uploaded my video playing the game for you to see. It was awesome

  4. I have used some brands’ VR headset, but among all the available virtual reality headset for sale in the market, I prefer the play station VR headset for its slick looking design. It is fantastic for heavy gamer like me. It gives unbelievable performance.
